In 1966 Dixie Dairy was hard sell advertising franchises with the tag line “Want to see a virtual gold mine.” The claim was of a 40 store target and “only a few good locations left.1″

Ottawa Journal  June 17, 1970

In fact there was only the one store at 101 Main St, which is actually still there 50 years later. According to Spacing Ottawa, of the three mentioned as planned only the Britannia Plaza store would ever open.

In 1975 the franchise was replaced by the Loeb chain Pinto Variety Store2.

  1. When they started building the shopping centre I wonder if people will remember that the wooded land was cleared by a man with a horse/pony. He worked during the day to clear and then left his little horse/pony (I can’t remember which, maybe it was a mule?) to spend the night on site. My sister and I would go over and feed him carrots and apples, good times in Britannia!
